Lucy is the nom de techno of Italian-born and Berlin-based Luca Mortellaro, one of the genre’s most exciting and ambitious DJ/producers. Since 2009, Mortellaro has focused his work through his own Stroboscopic Artefacts label, building an imprint and personal discography that has established itself as one of techno’s finest. Lucy (ne?e Luca Mortellaro) is one of the pre-eminent sonic adventurers of his time. Not bound to conventional pre-conceptions of what an electronic musician, producer, or DJ must be, Lucy has evolved his distinct sound signature by reconciling the deeply personal with the esoteric, and by harmonizing the spheres of technology and biology. In doing so, he has become rare as an artist, in his ability to please an audience while also introducing them to elements they were not yet familiar with and thereby pushing them out of their comfort zone. Whether he is acting in the role of producer, DJ, performer, or Stroboscopic Artefacts’ curator, Lucy’s clear passion for creative evolution and mutation is something that continues to attract new listeners, and keeps giving his current supporters new reasons to continue tuning in.

He has a rare ability to work his way into peoples’ minds in both contemporary and classical settings, conjuring real mood and atmosphere. Never one to pay heed to the zeitgeist, he prefers to deal in hypnotic soundscapes that really take you on a trip. Enigmatic as he is, and laidback as he seems, as an artist he is constantly unveiling new work. Displaying a large variation in terms of sound and method across many new releases each year?—?some of which come on his co-owned label Spazio Disponibile?—?he also puts out installations for public spaces and museums, uses obscure musical instruments, collaborates with likeminded producers, classical singers or visual artists. Donato seems to continuously challenge himself on a creative level: whatever method he uses, though, he is always likely to permeate your cerebral cortex and rewire it in fascinating and compelling new ways.

Donato Dozzy

Both artists are longtime friends who share a deep passion for exploring the outer limits the electronic music. This is evidenced on their own label, Archives Intérieures, which puts out an arresting array of sounds, consistently challenging the norm. After full lengths in 2012 and 2014 on Time To Express and Archives Intérieures respectively, December 2016 saw Sendai unveil ‘Ground and Figure’ on Editions Mego. Across ten tracks, it finds the pair working in a more economic framework, making for a vast and spacious journey through texture and tone, atmosphere and abstraction. The Sendai sonic landscape displays a duo in full control of their musical direction. Contrary to their previous outings, the pair’s working method became a real hybrid form, crossbreeding analog and digital, allowing the produced tracks more room to shift, swirl and swim around the circumference of the audio spectrum. Essentially then, Sendai is about machine music and hypnotic disorientation. When this duo gets to work in either the studio or on stage, a thudding, pulsating and shapeshifting experimental beast that lives in its own unique world, is summoned.
